Over the past thirty years, Frederick J. Brown has been a driving force reclaiming figuration's importance after a period of minimalism and abstraction. Brown's strong color and articulated figures, drawn from German Expressionism and African art are evident in his depictions of mythic figures such as Stagger Lee and John Henry, and in cultural heroes such as Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and Martin Luther King.
