Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. KANSAS CITY, MO—Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce that Krista Alba has been named assistant curator.

Before joining the Kemper Museum, Alba served as curatorial assistant at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Lincoln, MA), where she co-organized the “New England Triennial” (2022), managed its accompanying publication, and supported major projects such as “Jeffrey Gibson: INFINITE INDIGENOUS QUEER LOVE” (2021). Alba is currently curating “Downstream” (2022), an exhibition largely inspired by deCordova’s permanent collection and featuring video work by artist Allison Janae Hamilton.

“I am honored to join the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art at such an important moment of reflection, conversation, and lateral community building. I have long been impressed by the museum’s track record of stellar programming, collaboration with local and global stakeholders, and a commitment to bolstering an already impressive permanent collection by diversifying artistic perspectives and media,” said Alba. “It is an exciting time to join an institution that has really championed the arts and is such a vital force within Kansas City and the Midwest.”

Her experience, knowledge, and energy will lend so much to the museum, the Greater Kansas City area, and beyond,” said Erin Dziedzic, Kemper Museum’s director of curatorial affairs. “Krista will play an important role in the exciting projects developing at the museum and we look forward to the relevant and engaging exhibitions and programs she will be leading into the future.” 

Alba is eager to work with the exhibitions team on the museum’s new strategic plan, to co-produce responsive exhibitions, publications, and and programs, and to continue showcasing the museum's permanent collection. “I am also enthusiastic to begin a new chapter in Kansas City, as I have family ties in the area and spent much of my youth visiting Kansas and Missouri,” she says. “This city holds a special place in my heart and I am ready to contribute to the creative landscape here.”

Prior to her position at deCordova, Alba held roles as research assistant at the MIT Department of Architecture and curatorial research fellow at the MIT List Visual Arts Center (Boston, MA). In these positions, she conducted art historical research for the forthcoming show “Symbionts: Contemporary Arts and the Biosphere” (2022), “an exhibition that frames an urgent narrative about our ecosystems at a time of unprecedented environmental crisis,” as stated by the show’s curators Caroline A. Jones, Natalie Bell, and Selby Nimrod. She has also organized exhibitions and programming at the Hessel Museum of Art (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY) and Abrons Arts Center (New York, NY). Alba earned her M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College and dual undergraduate degrees in art history and studio art from the University of North Texas.
