The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts announced yesterday that it will award Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art a $100,000 grant in support of the forthcoming exhibition, Virginia Jaramillo: Principle of Equivalence. The exhibition is the first major retrospective exhibition by New York-based artist Virginia Jaramillo (Mexican American, born 1939), presenting a selection of over seventy paintings and handmade paper works over more than sixty years. 

The Foundation is pleased to support an exhibition that will bring long-overdue recognition to the work of Virginia Jaramillo. For decades the public has been unaware of the full scope of the artist’s innovative practice; Kemper Museum’s exhibition will celebrate her long career and ensure her place in the chronicles of contemporary abstraction.

While Principle of Equivalence is the first exhibition to focus on the breadth of Jaramillo’s career, her work has been included in influential group exhibitions for decades, including such groundbreaking examples as The De Luxe Show in 1971, one of the first major racially integrated exhibitions in the United States, Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles 1960–1980 (Hammer Museum, 2011), and We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85 (Brooklyn Museum, 2017). Jaramillo also has an exhibition history in Kansas City that stretches back to the 1970s at Douglas Drake Gallery. Her work was featured in Kemper Museum’s debut exhibition in 1994 and is represented in local permanent collections including Kemper Museum, Spencer Museum, Daum Museum, and the Hallmark Collection.  

"Tracing the impact of Jaramillo’s practice, the exhibition will feature early examples that pushed the depth of the painted surface to its very limits, innovations in the centuries-old practice of handmade papermaking, and recent large-scale paintings in which Jaramillo engages notions of antiquity and architectural ruin," said Erin Dzidzic, director of curatorial affairs for Kemper Museum. "This exhibition marks an important milestone in the artist’s career and serves as a timely reminder to look with intention toward those who have made important—if historically excluded—contributions to the history of American abstraction."

The exhibition, which will be on view from June 2–August 27, 2023 is organized by Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri and curated by Erin Dziedzic, director of curatorial affairs. A full-color catalog in conjunction with this exhibition will be distributed by Yale University Press.
