Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. Kansas City, MO–Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is actively recruiting volunteers, with intensions to expand its program offerings to deepen engagement with schools, universities, and professional groups, as well as well as everyday museum visitors with the increased access that will come with the 2025 opening of the Main Street Streetcar Extension.

In 2022, the museum introduced new volunteer roles, and the docent program continues to evolve to increase accessibility and foster unique opportunities to apply lived experiences and professional or personal interests to engagement programs. Flexible training sessions and meetings, as well as a variety of volunteer roles accommodate a range of interests and schedules. Museum volunteers work with Learning and Engagement staff to expand on existing programs like multilingual tours and language exchange programs, docent-led programs for medical students and healthcare professionals, and also help introduce new programs that our communities are requesting, like longer school tours and hands on art-making activities for visitors. Volunteers also enjoy regular docent outings and special access to training, workshops, and opportunities for engagement with artists, community partners, and arts educators. 

The roles are open to all and include training—no art experience is required to apply, just a genuine interest in contemporary art and ideas, and a willingness to learn and collaborate with museum staff, visitors, and community partners.

Interviews with new volunteers will begin in May, and the next training program begins in the Summer 2024. All Kemper Museum programs and tours remain free and open to the public, thanks to the generous support of volunteers, members, and donors. Located in Kansas City, Missouri, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is a leading presenter of global modern and contemporary art in the region. As the first contemporary art museum in the state, Kemper Museum has connected Midwest communities with the artists of our time since 1994. The museum cares for nearly 1,500 artworks by hundreds of artists in its growing Permanent Collection. A rotating selection of these works are on view in the museum’s Gunnar Birkerts-designed building, alongside rotating special exhibitions. Each year, the museum presents eight to ten exhibitions and major projects, with a special focus on emerging, mid-career artists, as well as artists from historically excluded groups. An active calendar of creative public programs provides meaningful engagement opportunities for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

Kemper Museum is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Admission, parking, and public programs are always free, thanks to the generosity of members and other donors.
