Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. Over the past thirty years, Frederick J. Brown has been a driving force reclaiming figuration's importance after a period of minimalism and abstraction. Brown's strong color and articulated figures, drawn from German Expressionism and African art are evident in his depictions of mythic figures such as Stagger Lee and John Henry, and in cultural heroes such as Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and Martin Luther King. This exhibition drew together more than thirty paintings, celebrating individuals who have shaped American cultural life, and demonstrating Brown's impact as one of our culture's most prominent and prolific portrait painters. The exhibition premiered at the Kemper Museum and will traveled to the New Orleans Museum of Art, LA, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY. Brown was an artist in residence at the Kemper Museum.
