Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. Color Application presents select works of art from Kemper Museum’s Permanent Collection in a companion exhibition to Polly Apfelbaum: Waiting for the UFOs (a space set between a landscape and a bunch of flowers), currently on view in the Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery. Color Application explores artists’ methods of incorporating color, relating them to Apfelbaum’s succinctly colorful works, and creating a direct conversation between the works in the two exhibitions.

In her woven rugs Sun Targets (Red, Blue, Yellow) (2018), Polly Apfelbaum (American, born 1955) enlists the three primary colors as a grounding element where other colors are woven into the rugs. She describes her Target Drawings (2018) as being more intuitive, where the colors are chosen at random. Similarly, Color Application showcases works that build on primary colors and include a range of hues that complement each other. For example, in his pastel-on-paper drawing Ocean Waters/Monhegan Island (1991), Alan Gussow (American, 1931–1997) applies expressive brushy strokes that separate from each other on the paper, drying in different stages and dramatically illuminating the range of blue hues. Coaxed Red (1994), a painting by Dan Christensen (American, born 1942), highlights the saturation of pigment with deep red and blue circles and dry strokes of lighter blues surrounding the central objects. Tanja Hollander (American, born 1972) presents monochromatic blue ripples of water and clouds moving across the horizon line in her seascape photograph Untitled 41215 (Placencia, Belize) (2004).
