Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Mark di Suvero

In Mark di Suvero’s Untitled ink-on-paper artwork, a variety of calligraphic brushstrokes, thin lines in marker, and translucent washes unfold across the paper. Dry ink marks with white negative space appear around the perimeter of the composition, while a wide stroke of ink wash curves down from the upper right to the center. The wash is overlapped in several places by darker, denser strokes of ink, mostly perpendicular to its course. Made by an artist best known for his monumental steel sculptures, this ink drawing carries the same concern with space, movement, and human energy seen in di Suvero’s three-dimensional works. He has referred to his drawings as capturing “the memory of an idea and how to transform this idea into a sculpture…they are the map of my thinking. Feeling in ink.”
