Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. Wayne Thiebaud

Wayne Thiebaud’s painting shows an aerial view of a winding brown-orange river that divides the composition vertically. On the left is a golden field dotted with trees and shadows cast by unseen entities outside the picture space. On the right, cultivated plots shift in color and perspective. Based in Sacramento, California from the 1950s until his death, Thiebaud first gained recognition in the 1960s for his signature subjects of cakes and pies, but he later also depicted cityscapes and landscapes. River Divide is one of his paintings of the Sacramento River Delta. Based on both observation and memory, it welcomes viewers to navigate imaginatively among riverbanks, fields, and roads. At the same time, its unnaturalistic colors suggest the artificial quality of a landscape made productive through irrigation, inviting reflection on the impact of humans on the environment.
