Women to Watch (Paper)
Presented in cooperation with the Kansas City Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts

Women to Watch is an exhibition program that features underrepresented and emerging women artists. Each exhibition focuses on a specific medium or theme chosen by the museum’s curator. The program is designed to increase the visibility of, and critical response to, promising women artists.

ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday, March 1, 2019
NOTIFICATION: Friday, March 15, 2019
EXHIBITION: June 14 – September 15, 2019
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri

Paper (The work of art must incorporate paper in part or in whole.)

The exhibition will focus on the transformation of paper into complex works of art. Paper is a ubiquitous medium that is made from a variety of materials, and the artists in Women to Watch will exemplify this variety of production. To reveal the broad range of possibilities of paper art, works in the exhibition may be delicate and light as seen in the suspended cut-out tapestries of Tomoko Shioyasu, or dense and heavy like Jae Ko’s built environments. They may use innovative technology similar to Nazgol Ansarinia’s 3-D printed architectural forms made of paper pulp, or employ more traditional methods like Liliana Porter’s tromp-l’oeil effects that obfuscate reality between the image and the physical surface of the paper. Paper can also speak to more personal reflections; Ursula von Rydingsvard infuses objects of sentimental attachment into her handmade paper, while Maren Hassinger twists and shapes newspapers as politically-charged symbols.

Women artists, currently living in Kansas or Missouri, within 150 miles of Kansas City, Missouri

Artists must submit a one-page resume, one-page artist statement, up to ten images of five to ten works, and an image checklist (including titles, dates, media, and dimensions). Three to five artists will be selected from the submissions. A studio visit with each selected artist will determine the actual works for the exhibition.

Erin Dziedzic, director of curatorial affairs, Kemper Museum

Between three to five artists will be selected to have their works included in an exhibition at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, June 14 – September 15, 2019. There is an opportunity to be selected by curators from the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), Washington, DC, for the national Women to Watch 2020 exhibition.
