Season's Greetings from Kemper Museum

Season's Greetings from Kemper Museum

Around the Museum

This holiday season we’d like to share with you Untitled No. 21 from The Yosemite Suite by David Hockney (b. 1937, Bradford, England).

Hockney has produced some of the most iconic artworks of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His ambitious and multifaceted approach to art has led him to embrace a range of methods and technologies—photography, fax machines, iPhones, and photocopiers— yet his work always remains rooted in painting.

The beautiful and innovative Untitled No. 21 is an iPad drawing. It was acquired by the Kemper Museum in 2017 through the generosity of the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Untitled No. 21 reflects two important emphases of the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection: adding works that are an artistic bridge from the twentieth to the twenty-first century; and focusing on the history of the gesture.

We can trace with our gaze Hockney’s looping, energetic gestures as he captured the wild energy and deep space of a mountainous ravine in Yosemite National Park in California.

Connecting with the art and artists, the ideas and technology of our time is only one of the many ways that the Kemper Museum experience stays relevant and exciting. Untitled No. 21 is evidence of this exiting engagement.

Mesmerized by the imagery and symbolism of the “evergreen” pictured, and the symbolism of the evergreen during the holiday season, we look with you toward the future, and wish you the very best in the New Year!

Happy Holidays!
