Cultural Counselor, Embassy of Finland speaks at Museum opening

On Friday, October 3, Dark Days, Bright Nights: Contemporary Paintings from Finland opened to the public and at once welcomed the beauty and culture of Finland into the heart of Kansas City. Following the reception and panel discussion which featured four of the exhibiting artists from Finland, Curator and Executive Director Barbara O'Brien welcomed a select group of patrons and members of the community to a private gathering held within the Museum's own Café Sebastienne. It was at this gathering that an esteemed guest addressed the group.

Danh Vō
Pop-up “Cake” invitation, 2010 / 2015
Paper and candle

The limited edition pop-up cake invitation card was first designed in 2010 by Kristine Suhr in collaboration with Danh Vō for his exhibition Hip Hip Hurra! at the National Gallery of Denmark. Vō refreshed the design for the occasion of his exhibition mothertongue at this year’s Danish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, adding an exterior band depicting his first passport photo, taken at age five upon his arrival in Copenhagen.

Dark Days, Bright Nights featured in Kansas City Star

Special to The Star

Because an expanse of Finland lies north of the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets for 60 days in the summer. Likewise, it never rises for 60 days in the winter.

Understandably, this surreal phenomenon has quite an effect on the population.

Scavenger Saturday's Fresh New Look

Scavenger Saturday has a new look, and with that comes fun new art activities for the whole family! Hone your art detective skills and discover something new about contemporary art at the Kemper Museum. The third Saturday of each month is Scavenger Saturdays for families. Children with adults may pick up a fun self-guided activity at the Visitor Services Desk and follow the clues on this “ART-tastic” adventure. When finished with the activity, children may pick up a take-home, art-making activity kit.

Meet Devin Rumley, the Kemper Museum's new Museum Educator

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art would like to welcome Devin Rumley to the Museum as our new Museum Educator, School and Family. Devin has experience as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher, as well as working with the Kemper Museum as a Family Programs Educator. Devin has a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, and is working toward two Masters degrees in arts education and administration—at UMKC and Harvard University. To introduce Devin to the kids and families of Kansas City and beyond, we sat down with her for a brief conversation. Please join us in welcoming Devin to the Museum!
