read catalogue essay and see larger image   back to list   see current exhibitions   see upcoming exhibitions

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, and based in New York City, Sikander examines the mythology of Indian miniature painting by adapting these techniques and images in her own miniature and large-scale paintings. Shahzia's work was exhibited in the 1997 Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. She was an artist in residence at the Kemper Museum, painting a mural in her gallery space for her exhibition. This was one of her first solo museum exhibitions.
