| Dove studied law and worked
as an illustrator before creating what are arguably the earliest works of
pure abstraction. Alfred Stieglitz showed Dove's work in 1912, marking the
first public exhibition of American abstract art. Dove based his work on
nature, but chose abstraction as the language of his expression, seeking
to reveal the inner life and spiritual forces of nature rather than its
physical representation. |
