Barney's wealthy New England family is often the subject of her artistic vision. Photographing their daily lives and social rules—weddings, cocktail parties, and Christmas dinners—Barney documents the complex relationships played out among family members. The resulting photographs have an almost snapshot quality, suggesting familial spontaneity and belying their monumental size.
