Assael pursues his own brand of figurative realism which merges Old Master style with contemporary psychological drama and ambiguity. He examines formal and emotional contrasts in his paintings, encouraging viewers to provide narrative content. Here, as in other paintings, he casts firefighters as heroes without the complex political agendas often associated with other civic workers.
