Artist Eric Fertman Combines Craft with Comedy

First Museum Exhibition for the Artist Opens February 3 at Kemper Museum’s Kemper at the Crossroads

Brooklyn-based artist Eric Fertman brings his mashed-up style of works of art to Kemper at the Crossroads in the exhibition Eric Fertman: Here’s Your Hat, What’s Your Hurry? The exhibition, on view February 3–July 28, 2012, at Kemper at the Crossroads, is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition. Admission is free to Kemper at the Crossroads, located at 33 W. 19th Street.
Visitors who come to First Fridays on February 3 will have the opportunity to meet Eric Fertman from 6:00–8:00 p.m. On Saturday, February 4, 2:00–3:00 p.m., people can learn more about his works in the gallery conversation, titled “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to ArtForum: The (Mis)Adventures of a Young Artist in New York City.” See below for a full schedule of events organized in conjunction with this exhibition.
With the skillful hand of a woodworker and the collaged imagery of a cartoonist, Fertman creates sculpture that evoke works by artists Philip Guston and Martin Puryear as well as drawings that suggest the urban grit of cartoonist R. Crumb. In The New York Times (January 30, 2009), Ken Johnson reviewed Fertman’s “comical, lovingly made, semiabstract wooden sculpture.”

The exhibition includes 21 sculptures, four drawings, and a dozen artist’s sketchbooks. Fertman embraces humor and whimsy and juxtaposes exaggerated bulbous “feet” with delicate and slender elements in his sculptures, made of stained oak. These works combine a variety of influences—East meets West, graffiti meets art history, and more.
Born in Boston in 1974, Fertman attended New York’s Cooper Union and graduated with a BFA in 1997. He has had a number of gallery exhibitions throughout the United States and in London. In 1997, he was awarded the Elliot Lash Award for Excellence in Sculpture from the Cooper Union.
An essay by Chief Curator Barbara O’Brien will accompany the exhibition. A free gallery guide for visitors will also be available.
