Between the Lines unites an expansive group of works on paper, all from the Kemper Museum’s permanent collection, to explore the gestural mark and the accumulative process of layering visual content. The catalyst for this exhibition is a group of four new drawings by Ethiopia-born artist Julie Mehretu, which were recently acquired by the Museum. Together, works by Romare Bearden, Richard Diebenkorn, Marco Maggi, and Cy Twombly, among others, address how artists experiment with the communicative and influential powers of the creative gesture.
