| One
of the preeminent street photographers of his generation, Garry Winogrand
shot his subjects “from the hip,” literally, on the city streets of urban
America. With a looseness and spontaneity that harkens back to the photographs
of Walker Evans and Robert Frank, Winogrand's honest portrayals of everyday
individuals buzz with energy and vivacity. His series Women are Beautiful
is among his best, capturing on film a vast inventory of female
types—from hippies to mothers, to socialites to businesswomen—that populate
the essential city of the modern experience. This exhibition marked the
first time that the entire portfolio has been on view at the Kemper Museum.
