Boston-based artist Catherine McCarthy layers her paintings with images
derived from art history and from her own family history. She draws from
both Old Master paintings and the stuff of childhood such as primers and
spelling exercises. Interchanging these images through beautiful layers
of painted imagery and text, she constructs a narrative language that speaks
to shared histories. As an artist in residence, McCarthy worked with 5th-
through 8th-grade students for several days at the Museum. This is her first
solo museum exhibition. |
