Tips and Guidelines for Tour Chaperones

Preschool through university educators may schedule free school tours of the Kemper Museum.

Please read the following tips and chaperone guidelines
and share this information with your chaperones and students
before your group arrives:

We require one adult chaperone for every ten students. Chaperones are asked to remain with the group and are responsible for addressing any disruptive student behavior. Groups deliberately violating Museum regulations after repeated warnings may be asked to leave. (Please distribute a copy of the regulations to each of the chaperones in your group prior to your visit).
No food, drink, or gum
No backpacks, large bags, or umbrellas (These items may be left in the coatroom or placed in lockers.)
No touching works of art, display furniture, cases, or frames. Please take care to not lean on or touch the walls; over time, many fingerprints will elicit repainting.
No flash photography, tripods, or monopods
Photography is permitted ONLY of the permanent collection in the Atrium, Courtyard, Meeting Room, Sally Kemper Wood Gallery, and Café Sebastienne. Photography is allowed for personal use and should not be published, including posted on the Internet.
No running or loud behavior.
Use PENCIL only in the Museum
Sketching in the galleries is allowed, but in pencil please. A limited supply of clipboards is available for use in the Museum. While writing on clipboards, please do not lean against walls or display cases.

Additional Guidelines for Tour Group Chaperones:

It would be helpful to take care of visits to the restroom and/or drinking fountain BEFORE arriving at the Museum or following completion of the docent tour if at all possible. If you’ve been on a long bus ride and need to use the restrooms when you arrive, please accompany the students to the restrooms so we start the tour in a timely fashion.
Please remain with your tour group for the duration of the tour and help keep the group together.
The docents will try to engage the students in conversation about the works on view. Your support in facilitating this is appreciated. Although you may desire to contribute to the conversation, unless you are assisting in “drawing out” the students, it is preferable that chaperones allow the students to respond to the questions posed by the docents.
Museum literature is a great teaching tool, but supplies are limited. Please assist us in ensuring that the materials are only gathered and distributed for the group by the teacher.
In case of an emergency, please take the student in distress to the visitor services desk or contact the nearest security officer.

To book a group tour reservation, please download our Group Tour Registration Form. You can then print and complete the form and fax or mail it to us. For more information contact Tara Andris at 816-457-6136 or tandris(at)kemperart(dot)org.

School districts interested in planning district-wide in-service teacher workshops for integrating aspects of the Museum into their curriculum should contact the Museum’s education department at 816-457-6134 or tandris(at)kemperart(dot)org.
